The famous mathematician and philosopher, Jean de Murs, an the renowned composer, bishop, and reformer, Philippe de Vitry, have been summoned to Avignon by Pope Clement VI to defend their theory of Ars Nova. It is a new system of musical measures and harmonics which has been strongly opposed by the church due to its mixing of secular melodies with liturgical music.

Jean de Murs and Philippe de Vitry have spent several weeks in the Abbey of Saint-Andre at Villeneuve-les-Avignon preparing their defense, but with the imminent arrival of the inquisitor who will judge the case, their sheet music has been stolen and both have fallen ill. Jean de Murs is suffering badly and is bedridden, and with their lives on the lien, Philippe de Vitry writes to his friend, the Franciscan monk Brother Francois, to ask for his help.

When rother Francois arrives at the abbey along with two novices and begins his investigation, he discovers that he Benedictine order may be behind not only the theft of the sheet music, but may also have been responsible for poisoning the two men. With time running out, Brother Francois must prove his theory by finding the sheet music and the poison before the inquisitor arrives.
